“Gateways  of the Sea” Project awarded by the Portuguese Tourism Board

The Tourist Complex “Gateways of the Sea” in Ponta Delgada, which includes the new “Cruise Terminal”, was awarded the 1st Prize for the “New Public Projects” in Portugal.  This distinction was handled at the Lisbon Tourism Trade Fair by “Turismo de Portugal”, the central public authority for Tourism, in the 5th Edition of the Prize.

The Award “Turismo de Portugal” aims at acknowledging and distinguishing projects of tourist interest which have significantly contributed to qualify the offer and reinforce the activity of the destination.

This award is a result of the tourist importance of the project to Ponta Delgada, the Azores and even nationally. The Jury’s President emphasized that the distinction “acknowledges the contribution of this development to the qualification of national tourism and to the notoriety of Portugal as a tourist destination of excellence”.

Being a matter of pride to the Azores, this award is a good support for the success of this emblematic project of the Azorean Government in terms of incrementing tourism in general and Cruise Tourism in particular.

This is not the first time that the venture "Gateways of the Sea" is recognized and awarded. In December 2008, it was considered the 3rd best “Cruise Port of the Year” at the "Seatrade Insider Cruise Awards 2008" held in Venice. The other winners were the Port of Tyne in the United Kingdom and the Passenger Terminal in Venice.
